We began to connect people with a source for fresh local produce in the summer of 2012 with an all-local and organic market, downtown Concordia. In 2013 we hope to do reach more people, earlier in the growing season.
Concordia's local farmers market is one of many projects on campus that works to engage the Concordia community with their food system, encouraging a critical look at waste and provision cycles of their daily food consumption. Marché Locale was the pilot initiative from Concordia University's Dean of Students and Health services departments. As part of their healthy eating initiative, this weekly market brought fresh local foods and artisanal products to Quartier Concordia for students and the community at large from August 2012 through to October.
In our pilot year we learned a lot, and we hope to apply this knowledge to make the 2013 market an emblem of how committed to Sustainability and community engagement Concordia can be. In 2013 we're growing. Our coordination team has expanded from one intern to two coordinators and four internship positions, each with an academic accompaniment to project-based learning. We believe good food can inspire: preventative health care, environmental stewardship, social equity and pleasure in sharing.
Please take a look at our 2012 section to get an idea of Marché Local, and contact us at [email protected], with any questions. Thank you!
